Nick begins Chapter One by relaying to us an interesting piece of advice that his father gave him a long time ago: “‘Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone,’ he told me, ‘just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages you’ve had” (1). This might strike you as being incredibly hypocritical or justified.

This is ironic in a way because as we have seen in later chapters, Nick seems to ridicule the rich yet he is in the business of getting rich. In addition, Nick decides to go into the bond business on Wall Street being that there was an enormous economic boom during the 1920s, such a position can enable Nick to make massive amounts of money. As discussed in the first post, his wealth is questionable. Nick is from a seemingly prominent family from the Midwest, yet his father can only finance him for a year and he lives in an “eyesore”.
